A CARING community has rallied round to support a family whose summer holiday has been struck by tragedy.

Last week Fiona and Will Upton, from Wylam, were enjoying a summer break with their daughters amid the breathtaking Alpine scenery of Chamonix in France.

While meeting up with friends, on Saturday Will suffered devastating injuries in a paragliding accident which has left him in a critical condition.

Will (48) is currently in hospital with ‘life altering injuries’ including multiple fractures and multiple organ damage.

The severity of his injuries is such that it is anticipated he may remain in hospital in France for several months.

Wife Fiona (42) and young daughters Eva and Elsie are at his side. However the family has been left in a desperate situation.

Fiona’s sister Kirsty Thatcher said: “At the moment Will is unable to work and Fiona was about to change jobs and is also unable to work.

“Will will be in hospital for several months and Fiona will need to go back and forth and at the moment they have no income.”

They are being helped by friends in France, where the couple used to live. But with no source of money Fiona and her young family were faced with a bleak prospect.

Now friends and neighbours have joined forces to ensure that their finances are the least of the Upton’s worries.

A Go Get Funding page has been established raising funds to help towards living costs, phone calls and expenses.

So far nearly £4,000 has been raised to help the family as scores of well-wishers took to the internet, keen to do their bit for the family.

Many have also expressed their sorrow at the situation, with some sending prayers and thoughts along with their donation.
