A 10-YEAR-OLD Ovingham Middle School pupil has been chosen to represent the UK at an international camp in Sweden.

Oliver Sowerby-Robinson, who is in year 6, was selected as one of only four children from the UK who will head to Sweden this summer to take part in the four week programme with Children’s International Summer Villages (CISV).

Children from up to 12 countries will attend the village and take part in a range of educational and cultural activities. The villages aim to develop cross-cultural understanding in young people from around the world.

Oliver was inspired to apply for the opportunity after year 5 teacher Dianne Colwell, who had experience with the programme from a previous school, gave an assembly to the children to encourage them to think about applying

“I have always been interested in other countries and other cultures, so that got my attention,” Oliver said.

Oliver was required to submit an application in which he had to explain a trip which he really enjoyed. He chose a Buddhist retreat in Yorkshire which he had been on with his family.

The organisers whittled the applications down to just four and Oliver will be joining two girls and another boy from Leeds, who will make the trip in July.

During his stay, Oliver will spend three days with a Swedish family, and he is preparing for the trip by learning some language basics from an app.

“I am really excited. I am most looking forward to staying with the family because I would like to see how Swedish people live compared to how we live,” Oliver added.

Mrs Colwell said: “This is truly a once in a lifetime experience and I cannot think of a better ambassador for the UK to send than Oliver.”
