HE’S the Haydon Bridge man who goes to work dressed as a Roman Centurion, an Anglo Saxon, and sometimes as a Stone Age hunter gatherer.

Now Kevin Robson, who specialises in history talks, tours and educational activities, has been included in the shortlist for a prestigious national award.

The 38-year-old, who set up his history tours venture Wild Dog Outdoors four years ago, has been nominated to become Visit England’s Tourism Superstar 2017.

Kevin, who is the only nominee from Northumberland, said: “It’s a great honour to make the top 10, because I believe somebody was put forward from every county in England.

“The cultural heritage we have here in the North is very unique. It is very different to Scotland, and the South of England, so it is a great feeling to be flying the flag for this area.”

Originally from Consett, Kevin worked in the construction industry before deciding to follow his passion – the study of history.

He embarked on a career- changing move in 2013 by establishing Wild Dog Outdoors alongside his wife, Sara.

He hosts tours on Hadrian’s Wall, at castles and other historical landmarks, and runs educational workshops aimed at providing adults and children with a stimulating experience of different periods in history, from the Bronze and Iron ages, to Medieval Britain.

Last year, Kevin hosted a memorable event at Hexham Abbey where he transported visitors back to Anglo Saxon times by recreating seventh century characters, such as legendary Geatish prince Beowulf.

A Visit England spokesman said: “Anyone who goes on a tour with Kevin is treated to secret stories and anecdotes, usually the reserve of archaeologists and historians, which bring the locations to life.

“Most of all, Kevin loves to enchant all those around him, using his skills to bring the magic of Northumberland to life.”

Visit England director Patricia Yates said: “The sheer calibre of this year’s entrants is testament to the outstanding customer service that is the foundation of England’s tourism industry.

“I really encourage you to join in and vote as we celebrate our tourism superstars who consistently go above and beyond customers’ expectations, and who contribute so much to ensure visitors have a great time.”
