HOUSEHOLDERS across Tynedale are being warned more flooding is possible with Environment Agency flood alerts issued for the Rivers Tyne, Rede and Pont.

Torrential rain over the last 24 hours has seen river levels rise sharply, with further persistent showers likely to continue throughout today.

Flood alerts urge residents to prepare for the event of flooding and the Tyne from Wylam to Warden, as well as Cockshaw Burn at Hexham and other small watercourses, have become raging torrents.

In Acomb, the Birkey Burn is overflowing on to the A6079 which connects the village to the A69.

Standing water at Brunton Crossroads and at Chollerford roundabout is proving difficult to negotiate.

A section of the A68 at Kiln Pit Hill has also been closed due to the depth of water.

In East Tynedale, Ovingham First and Middle Schools are now closed due to flooding in the area and the road from the village to Ovington is closed.

Standing water also continue to cause problems between Prudhoe and Hexham on the A695.

Homes in Rochester, Otterburn and Elsdon are among those which have been notified of the swollen River Rede.

And in Ponteland, low lying roads and Ponteland Park have felt the affects of the deluge.

The alert for the River Pont also extends to homes in surrounding villages including Belsay, Stamfordham and Matfen.

Flooding between Hexham and Prudhoe has also caused delays and the cancellation of train services between Hexham and Newcastle on the Tyne Valley Line. Replacement bus services are in operation.

A statement from the Environment Agency said: “At the moment, we do not expect to issue any flood warnings for this area, although the situation is changeable.

“We are constantly monitoring river levels and have workers on standby to clear blockages and operate defences if required.”
