ALL eyes will be looking to the skies this weekend when a vast squadron of microlight aircraft flies across Tynedale.

More than 50 mini-aircraft will fly the length of the Tyne Valley to mark the 25th anniversary of Newcastle's Streetwise Young People's Project.

The event - which could set a new Guinness World Record - is set to take place on Saturday, May 28 - with planes reaching the district's skies from 11am.

Streetwise's chief executive Mandy Taylor said the time, and even the day, could change depending on weather conditions.

But weather permitting, it is expected to go ahead on Saturday, with pilots on standby for the whole of the Bank Holiday weekend.

The planes, which will be flying in formations of three, and will reach heights of up to 1,500ft, will set-off from Eshott near Morpeth, at 10am tomorrow.

They will fly east, reaching Tynedale by around 11am, meeting at the confluence of the North and South Tynes at Watersmeet near Warden, before turning east and flying over Hexham, Corbridge and Prudhoe and on to Tynemouth, before heading back north along the coast and returning to Eshott.

The event is expected to set a new world record for the number of micro-light planes flying along the length of a river.
