THOUSANDS of visitors have descended on The Sill National Landscape Discovery Centre on Hadrian's Wall.

The newly-built £14.8m visitor centre, at Once Brewed near Bardon Mill, opened its doors for the first time last Saturday.

The Northumberland National Park Authority said the new centre attracted 5,000 people during its first weekend alone, which has been followed by an equally busy week.

A spokeswoman for the authority said: "The Sill has captured the imagination of so many people, who have been eager to come and see the place for the first time.

"We've had people of all ages through the doors, and the new building, the exhibition room, and all of the activities we have put on so far have been really well received."

Activities have included bushcraft with national park rangers, storytelling, and music with Northumbrian pipers, while a vintage bus ride took some visitors from The Sill to the country park at Walltown, near Greenhead.
