A TAXI driver who drove for five miles down the wrong carriageway of the A69 has been handed a suspended prison sentence.
Rasel Ahmed (25) of Gill Street in Benwell joined the A69 near Prudhoe and travelled east towards Newcastle, in the westbound carriageway, at around 5.15am on Wednesday, August 9.
Police were informed after he passed a car and a lorry while travelling the wrong way in the fast lane, and he was pulled over by an officer near to the A1, by which point he had joined the correct carriageway.
Appearing at North Tyneside Magistrates' Court last week, Ahmed pleaded guilty to one count of dangerous driving and was given a 12 week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, and 200 hours of unpaid work.
