ONE person has been hospitalised in the wake of this morning's four vehicle smash which closed the A69 at Haydon Bridge.

At around 7.10am, police were called to the scene of the collision west of Hexham.

The crash on the eastbound carriageway involved an HGV and three other vehicles.

Emergency services are at the scene and one person has been taken to hospital.

However none of those involved in the incident are thought to have suffered serious or life-threatening injuries.

The A69 has been closed to traffic the B6351 junction near Hexham and the A686 junction at Haydon Bridge.

The road is shut in both directions as due to a fuel spillage the westbound carriageway has also been shut.

A diversion is in place, taking motorists via Acomb Road Ends and the Military Road.

Northumbria Police officers remain at the scene, and are working to get the road re-opened as soon as possible.
