TYNEDALE’S most iconic tree is branching out after being crowned England’s tree of the year in December.

Now the sycamore on Hadrian’s Wall near Bardon Mill has been shortlisted for the European tree of the year award.

Voting is now under way, with the district’s most popular perennial among 12 contenders from across the continent.

The Woodland Trust is calling on the Tynedale public to cast their votes before the end of February, for the competition, organised by the Environmental Partnership Association.

Known as the ‘Sycamore Gap’ tree, due to its location in a dramatic dip on the Roman Wall, it received 21 per cent of almost 12,000 in last year’s national poll.

Sycamore Gap famously featured in the 1991 Kevin Costner film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.
