PEOPLE in Tynedale woke up to blankets of snow this morning as wintry weather hit the district.

A yellow weather warning for snow is in place for the North-East.

County council gritters were out in force yesterday evening, gritting routes in Allendale, Bellingham, Haltwhistle and Otterburn.

But heavy rain turned to snowfall in the early hours with up to 10cm falling on higher ground.

The combination of surface water, slush and snow has created tricky travel conditions across the region.

Northumbria Police were alerted to problems with driving conditions on the A68 just before 7am this morning.

Surface water and snow affected the A68 southbound at Kiln Pit Hill.

And the A68 Broomhaugh southbound was closed to traffic due to problems southbound at Durham.

Police were out at the scene alongside county council gritters.

And Northumbria Police say the roads have now been re-opened.

Northumberland County Council has issued alerts this morning due to the adverse weather conditions.

Whitfield Primary School has been closed due to snow.

And a number of school buses are not running due to dangerous road conditions.

The route from Kiln Pit Hill to Slaley and the route to Greenhead Primary School are not running.

There will also be no school transport for routes affecting Gillingham Coaches travelling from the Blanchland and Slaley are to Hexham and Corbridge schools.

Any problem areas can be reported to the county council on 0345 600 6400 or via www.northumberland.gov.uk/winter
