A MAN from Tynedale has died after being hit by crane in an industrial accident in Scotland.

John Cousin, from Simonburn, was killed after he was hit by the boom of a crane he was directing on the Queensferry Crossing.

Police Scotland were called to the incident near Edinburgh at 12.20pm last Thursday.

Mr Cousin (62) was pronounced dead a short time later.

Another man suffered minor injuries in the incident on Queensferry Crossing’s north tower.

Work on the new £1.4bn road bridge across the Firth of Forth began in 2011 and is scheduled to be complete in December.

The construction workers’ union, UCATT has sent its condolences to Mr Cousin’s family, noting the poignancy of the fatality which occurred on Workers’ Memorial Day.

Regional secretary Harry Frew said: “UCATT will be doing everything it can to find out how and why this accident occurred and to ensure that similar fatalities are prevented in the future.”

Police Scotland are carrying out inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

And the Scottish secretary of the union Unite has called on the the Scottish Health and Safety Executive to hold an investigation.
