THE NATIONAL Grid has thanked motorists and residents in Fourstones following the successful delivery of a transformer.

Earlier this month, specialist haulage contractors delivered a transformer from Tilbury Docks in Essex to the Fourstones substation.

The project will ensure Northumberland has a safe and reliable source of renewable energy.

The transformer, a large piece of electrical equipment, was delivered by contractors on a Sunday morning.

The delivery vehicle and transformer travelled up the A1 before joining the B6319 at Haydon Bridge, where it completed its journey on to Fourstones substation.

Motorists and residents along the route were notified in advance of the delivery and the National Grid worked to minimise disruption wherever possible.

The delivery was part of National Grid’s continuing works to upgrade Fourstones substation and its installation will allow the connection of an onshore wind farm to the National Grid.

As part of National Grid’s work to educate and inform residents in the Fourstones area on the impact of the work, children at Shaftoe Trust Primary School in Haydon Bridge were visited by the National Grid who held two ‘Science Made Simple’ workshops to teach children all about science and engineering.

Students also learned how National Grid’s work will connect their community to locally- produced renewable energy.

Project engineer at National Grid, Graham Law, said: “We carefully planned the route with our specialist haulage contractors and local authorities to ensure the delivery was safe and went smoothly.

“We would like to thank local residents and motorists for their understanding and patience during the delivery as well as the continuing work at the Fourstones substation.”
