YOUNG cyclists descended on Bardon Mill last weekend to find out how to protect their bikes from opportunistic thieves.

Youngsters from as far afield as Haltwhistle and Catton took part in the event, which was led by local police community support officers.

In addition to sound advice, they received a bike lock, while their cycles were marked with the stamp of the national bike registry.

If a bike is lost or stolen, the unique registration number will make it easier and quicker for police to locate the owner if the cycle is recovered.

Event organiser Debbie Finlayson said: "This was a very worthwhile event. A big thank you to parents for bringing their children along, to the PCSOs, and also to David Collins for his help in marking each bike."

It is hoped another crime prevention event for young cyclists will take place during the school summer holiday.
