COUNCILLORS in Haydon Bridge have called for a review of last year’s decision to close the village’s fire station.

The retained station closed last October as part of efforts by the previous Labour administration at Northumberland County Council to save money, despite objections from councillors and residents. Since the Conservatives took over the council following last month’s local election, Coun. Esmond Faulkes told a meeting of Haydon Parish Council that it was worth writing to the authority’s new leader, Peter Jackson, who spoke out against the fire station closure last year.

Coun. David Robson said: “The Conservatives said they were against closing the fire station, so we should ask them if they can reconsider this.”

Councillors acknowledged that their efforts to revive the station could be in vain. The county council is currently negotiating the sale of the station.
