RAIL union RMT has cancelled a ballot on strike action after securing a revised pay offer for its members at Northern Rail.

The ballot, which was prompted by what the union described an “unacceptable pay offer” for staff which did not match industry benchmarks, was due to end on Wednesday.

A spokesman for Northern said: “We have offered a two-year pay deal, which will see more than 5,000 Northern employees receive a 2.2 per cent increase for the current year, backdated to April 2016. There will be a further increase of 2.4 per cent or January 2017 Retail Price Inflation, whichever is greater, for the year from April 2017.”

A loyalty scheme to reward long-service and pay boosts for specific staff who are at the lower end of the Northern pay scale have also been put in place.
