HUNDREDS of residences in the North Tyne were affected by a power cut on Monday night.

Households and businesses around the Barrasford, Chollerford and Humshaugh areas were left with no power due to an overhead line which had been brought down.

The loss of power caused confusion on Chollerford Bridge, where motorists were left to manoeuvre the one-way system without the assistance of the traffic lights on either side.

A spokesman for Northern Powergrid said: “Seven hundred and one customers were affected due to an overhead line that was brought down, which we believe was due to a third party. The power cut was between 6pm and 8.45pm. The first customers went off at 6pm and most were back on within an hour.”
