Tony Gates, chief executive of the Northumberland National Park Authority, said it was great news for the North-East as a whole. “This award is wonderful recognition for Northumberland National Park, and one that highlights our county’s outstanding natural beauty on a national stage.
“I’ve no doubt that will provide a great boost to the region’s tourism industry.”
Chairman Glen Sanderson said the park’s sheer diversity was unique and the reason it was a winner.
He also praised the hard work of the people who made it all work. “We have one of the smallest national parks and the authority has one of the smallest bodies of staff.
“And yet their wonderful drive and ambition have created what we have in front of us today.
“The people who live and work in the park are equally to thank too.
“It’s the whole atmosphere of the place that is special and the fact it has now been recognised nationally is just reward.”
The park celebrates its 60th anniversary this year.
