TYNEDALE is preparing itself for a multi-million tourism boost with the prestigious British Masters golf tournament heading to the district next year.

More than 50,000 golf fans are expected to watch some of the world’s best golfers compete in the four-day spectacular at Close House, at Heddon-on-the-Wall, between September 28 and October 1, in what is likely to be the district’s biggest ever sporting event.

It is the first time the European Tour has been staged in the North-East since Slaley Hall staged the last of its six Great North Opens in 2002, and is expected to generate millions of pounds for the local economy.

Former world number one golfer Lee Westwood will host the tournament.

He is attached tour professional at Close House, a post he has held since 2011.

The announcement confirms Close House’s growing status, and is a dream come true for owner Graham Wylie who has invested millions into turning the course into a international showpiece venue.

Excitement is already starting to build in the village, with locals looking forward to welcoming some of the biggest names in the sport, along with the tens of thousands of fans.

The tournament will also be broadcast live to a worldwide audience on one of Sky TV’s sports channels.

John Stewart, a member of Heddon Parish Council, said: “This will be one of the biggest golfing events in the North-East, and the big names of Lee Westwood, Danny Willett and Sergio Garcia will be playing on our doorsteps.

“I think it is going to put Heddon-on-the-Wall on the map and help local businesses, big and small, across the North-East.”
