PUPILS at a Tynedale church school swapped the classroom for the playing field earlier this week.

No fewer than 45 pupils and five members of staff at Newbrough C of E Primary School took part in the first stage of a new running challenge on Tuesday.

Every Tuesday lunchtime, they will run laps of a 100-metre course within the school grounds, in an attempt to run the
26-miles of a full marathon between now and the end of the school year in July.

It is part of a healthy lifestyle initiative by the charity Kids Run Free, which organises events combining fun and fitness.

Newly-appointed headteacher Jo Trotter said: “By doing a bit each week, the children can run a marathon.

“This is the first week and we are all very excited about it.

“The school cook provided a special lunch as part of the launch day on Tuesday.

“We will be counting the laps and keeping a record of how everyone does, and it will be interesting to see how many of us manage to complete a full marathon by the end of the school year.”
