POLICE have made an arrest in connection with reports of a man armed with a gun and a knife on the streets of Prudhoe.

A 31-year-old man was arrested at 1.50am on suspicion of possessing a firearm. He remains in police custody. 

Enquiries are ongoing into the incident and officers will continue patrols around the neighbourhood today.

The arrest comes after a night of unease which saw the force helicopter hovering above the town and a reported strong police presence in the West Wylam area. 

At 3.35pm on Sunday police received a report of an altercation between two men who were known to one another. 

The caller stated that one of the men may have been in possession of a firearm and possibly a knife. 

There were no reported injuries, but officers were dispatched to the area and carried out a search. 

Neighbourhood Inspector Kevin Oates said: "Residents may have noticed additional officers in Prudhoe on Sunday. 

"These officers were making enquiries into the incident and there to speak to the local community. 

"Enquiries are currently ongoing into the incident and anyone who may have any information to help, please get in touch. 

"It is believed the people involved are all known to each other and there was no threat to the wider public."
