MILLIONS of viewers will find out this weekend whether an angler from Newbrough has won a new reality TV series.

James Stokoe (33) has made the final of the BBC Two programme Earth’s Wildest Waters – The Big Fish, presented by adventurer Ben Fogle, with the outcome of the series broadcast on Sunday at 8pm.

As part of the television series James has been in competition with seven other keen fishermen and women from across the country and has travelled to some far flung places across the world where fishing is notoriously difficult.

He has made it through rounds held in Iceland, Cuba, Nigeria, Canada and Costa Rica, and is in a three-way battle for the title as the series heads to Zambia, in southern Africa.

James said: “The show has had amazing feedback so far – a lot being from non-anglers, which was one of the main targets of the show.

“I think the locations and amazing fish have captured the imaginations of a lot of people and shown them that fishing is a lot more than people sitting on a river bank watching a float bob up and down!

“Getting to the final is a dream come true and one of the highlights of my life.

“Thinking back to the day I applied, I never imagined in a million years I’d get on the show, never mind make it this far and I still pinch myself to check it’s actually happening!

“I think the show has showcased who I really am – just a normal lad – and how I feel about fishing, which is a massive part of my life.

“The support I’ve received from strangers and viewers who watch the show has been huge, which means a lot to me as a person.”
