POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a car was set on fire in Hexham.

It happened at 12.40am in the early hours of Monday morning, when a car parked on a driveway at Eilanville was targeted.

Officers believe the fire, which is said to have caused substantial damage to the vehicle, was started by one person who fled the scene.

An investigation has now been launched and police are carrying out extra patrols in the area.

A 35-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of arson and released on bail pending further inquiries.
