SOME say it’s a monstrosity – but others insist a new railway footbridge will improve safety on a popular walking route.

Network Rail has built the structure over the line behind Hordley Acres and Greenwich Gardens in Haydon Bridge as part of its national scheme to replace traditional level crossings with safer measures.

The footbridge has divided opinion among residents, with some expressing concern over the appearance of the prominent feature.

One resident said: “It’s big and unsightly. It’s quite high and it is close to houses in the area, and I’ve heard people say that it could attract children.

“But it does have railings, and it is safer than the old level crossing.”

Haydon Parish Council vice-chairman Eileen Charlton said: “We’ve known for some time that all level crossings would be replaced with footbridges, so in that respect we’ve had no choice in the matter.

“I’m sure that if there are some trees planted in front of the bridge, it will not stand out as much. These things usually mellow and hopefully it will.”

A Network Rail spokesman said: “Since 2010, Network Rail has closed more than 900 level crossings, including the one in Haydon Bridge, and we have plans to close hundreds more. The footbridge at Haydon Bridge is an example of our commitment to make the railway safer.”
