A MAN has pleaded guilty to causing the death of a Tynedale cyclist by dangerous driving.

Daniel Rushton died on January 27 this year. The 20-year-old was cycling on Great North Road in Newcastle when he was involved in a collision with a car.

Daniel grew up in Haydon Bridge before moving to Newcastle. He was a highly regarded swimmer, sports coach and qualified lifeguard.

This week, Ian Wilson, of Alexander Terrace, Hazelrigg, Newcastle, appeared at Newcastle Crown Court.

The 51-year-old pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving. The case was adjourned for pre-sentence reports to be prepared, and Wilson will return to court to be sentenced on November 18. He was released on conditional bail.

Daniel Rushton became a swimming sensation at the age of 15, when he swam 1,400 lengths of Haltwhistle’s outdoor pool during continuous downpours.

The 21-mile journey in 2010 earned him the Edward Waite Trophy for young sportsman of the year at the Tynedale Sports Council Awards.
