FOLK dancers will converge on Hadrian's Wall this weekend (July 4 & 5) for the annual Dancing the Wall event.

Traditional clog, rapper and long sword dancers from all over the region will be joining Hexham-based team Hadrian Clog for a series of displays on Hadrian's craggy northern frontier.

In the process, they will be raising funds for the country’s only bespoke clog festival, Clogfest, which takes place in Skipton the following weekend.

On Saturday July 4, they will perform at Grey’s Monument in Newcastle at 10.15am, Corbridge at 12.00 and Housesteads Roman fort at 2.15pm.

On Sunday July 5, they will be at the House of Meg tea rooms in Gilsland at 10.30am and Lanercost tea rooms at 12.00.

There will also be an evening of traditional music, song and dance at Gilsland Village Hall on the Saturday night, with entertainment provided by the dance teams themselves.

Georgia Shorrock, founder of Hadrian Clog, said: "This is a wonderful area, with its spectacular scenery and great dance venues, for hosting an event like this.

"Originally we just felt we wanted to share Hadrian's Wall with our fellow dancers from other parts of the UK and this is the third time we've done so - it's starting to become a regular fixture in the calendar.

"Each year there have been more dancers than the year before and they are coming from even further afield, so this weekend should be quite a spectacle of traditional dancing all along the Wall, where even the Romans would have worn clogs!"
