MULTI-MILLION pound plans to transform the run-down Hexham bus station site into an ultra-modern complex of shops and luxury apartments have been unveiled.
Several “blue chip” retail organisations have already expressed an interest in occupying the shops, according to developer Dysart, which is offering a tantalising glimpse of what the Priestpopple site could look like if its £13m proposals are approved.
The company has been trying for over a decade to develop the site – and could now be on the verge of succeeding.
The 1930s bus station building will be demolished and replaced by three-storey development of 32 apartments, most with balconies overlooking the town centre.
The project also incorporates the listed Ropery building, which will be converted into five or six properties at the affordable end of the housing market.
Central to the scheme will be a walkway which meanders through the centre of the development, giving direct and convenient access for the first time to the town’s Marks & Spencer store.
