A THREE-CAR collision claimed the life of one motorist in Ryton this morning.

Police are now appealing for witnesses following the fatal crash on the A695 Crawcrook bypass.

The collision happened at around 5.40am today.

Three cars were involved, a Vauxhall Astra a Peugeot 207 and a Ford Mondeo.

The driver of the Vauxhall, a 29-year-old man, was taken to hospital with serious, life threatening injuries. He has since died as a result of his injuries.

The driver of the Peugeot, a woman in her 20s, was taken to hospital for treatment, her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The driver of the Ford was uninjured.

After the crash, police closed the road to allow inquiries into the collision to be carried out. It is now re-open.

Northumbria Police are continuing to carry out inquiries and are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to contact them on 101 quoting reference 156 100616.
