THE family of a Hexham man killed in a mystery hit-and-run attack are appealing for information, 25 years on from his death.

Charles Trueman was killed on August 31, 1991 after suffering fatal head injuries.

The 83-year-old was hit by a car close to the junction with Dean Street and Loosing Hill in Hexham at around 5pm and later died in hospital.

A blue Metro car was believed to be seen leaving the scene immediately after the incident but police say no eye witnesses have come forward.

Now, a quarter of a century on from his death, his family has issued a desperate plea for information.

Dunkirk veteran and retired gardener, Charles was well known in the town.

Daughter, Elaine O'Neil (56) said: "Hexham is a relatively small town and I'm convinced someone knows exactly what occurred and who was responsible.

"We would be extremely grateful for any information that could help us understand the true course of events on that fateful day - this is not about finding someone to blame."

Northumbria Police say they would welcome any new evidence on the incident.

Anyone with any information about the incident should contact police on 101 ext 62585 and request to speak to the Operation Dragoon team.
