PUPILS at Newbrough Primary School are preparing to race the electric car they designed and built.

The Newbrough Chariot will line up at the Nissan test track in Sunderland next Wednesday, when each of the 13 youngsters involved will take a turn of driving the small-sized vehicle.

They will be one of 50 school teams taking part in the event, which will be the culmination of weeks of learning and hard work.

The year 4 children have been working alongside local engineer Chris Bayliss on the project, in conjunction with the Greenpower Education Trust.

Chris said: “Preparation for this event has involved understanding how the car works, doing a detailed scrutiny of the car, checking its assembly.

“The children have covered how to use tools, making body work, art work for the body, how friction works, and magnetism.”

He added that children had enjoyed doing practice runs in the car, and that both staff and parents had been impressed with their enthusiasm.

The project has covered a wide range of academic subjects, such as science, technology and maths, as well as engineering.

The scheme, which received funding from the Rotary Club of Hadrian’s Wall, has also involved teacher Jake Chapman and teaching assistant Paula Hall.
