RUMOURS that recently crowned Tour de France champion Chris Froome will compete on the district‘s roads have begun circulating in earnest.

This morning brought confirmation that Team Sky, of which he is a part, will be one of the nine UCI world teams participating in this year’s Tour of Britain.

Stage five of the prestigious cycling series starts from Prudhoe and passes through Hexham and other Tynedale villages on Thursday, September 10.

National media has already speculated that Froome, an Olympic silver medallist and cycling‘s hottest property at the moment, could represent the team throughout the tour if he decides not to compete in the Vuelta a Espana.

Joining the elite Team Sky in the competition will be Mark Cavendish’s Etixx-Quick-Step team, while Sir Bradley Wiggins‘ newly-formed Team Wiggins will make their Tour of Britain debut.
