A COUNCILLOR has suggested traffic lights could solve congestion on a busy Haydon Bridge Street.

Shaftoe Street has been a bottleneck for decades, with cars parked on both sides of the narrow road.

At a meeting of Haydon Parish Council on March 24, Coun. David Robson said: “Is it feasible to put traffic lights on Shaftoe Street? Is it worth progressing, or is it a non-starter?”

Coun. Simon Walker said: “It’s a terrible idea.”

However, Coun. Eileen Charlton pointed out that usage of Shaftoe Street has increased since the village bypass opened in 2009.
