RAIL passengers affected by the month-long closure of the Tyne Valley line are being offered compensation.

As a full train service between Newcastle and Carlisle resumed this morning, following a landslip at Farnley near Corbridge, operator Northern Rail made the pledge while thanking customers for their patience during the disruption.

Replacement bus services and specially-arranged commuter trains were laid on to help passengers travelling between the Hexham and Prudhoe stations, while Network Rail engineers battled to clear more than 35,000 tonnes of debris from the tracks and stabilise the bank at Farnley Haugh.

Northern Rail managing director, Alex Hynes, said: "Our customers have been extremely patient while Network Rail worked on this challenging project and we would like to thank them for their understanding.

"We are offering support to those affected, including both leisure users and commuters, with a compensation deal, details of which can be found at northernrail.org/tynevalley.

"I'd also like to thank the on-site engineers and our people on the ground for their commitment to keeping our customers moving during this period of disruption."

Weekly season ticket holders must make claims by March 12, while monthly and annual season ticket claims must be made by March 13.
