MORE than a decade after the scheme was first mooted,  a formal application to relocate Hexham bus station to the town‘s Loosing Hill car park has been submitted.

And with Northumberland County Council seeking consent from itself, the result seems a foregone conclusion.

Planning officials are confident that road safety concerns on the site near the  double roundabout close to the site  have been adequately dealt with.

They have also agreed that the flowering cherry trees and hawthorn bushes at the west end of the site can be safely retained

A ”feature monolith“ incorporating the existing clock from the old bus station will draw a link to the past.

Existing memorial benches will be  incorporated into the design and 10 cycle stands have also been included

Around 50 of the existing 125 spaces in the Loosing Hill car park would be retained, but these would include a taxi rank and disabled bays.

The new bus station has to be up and running before work can start in the multi-million pound scheme to redevelop the existing bus station into a  shops and flats complex.
