A YOUNG boy in Prudhoe was airlifted to hospital yesterday evening (05/05) after being knocked down.

The five-year-old boy was hit by a car on Front Street, near the town's Waterworld leisure centre, at around 4.45pm, and was taken to Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary by a Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) helicopter.

The boy arrived at the hospital within five minutes, and his condition was described as stable on arrival.

A spokesman from GNAAS said: "The paramedics would like to thank everybody at the scene, including members of the public, who looked after the boy until the arrival of the emergency services."

Front Street was closed in both directions between Neale Street and West Wylam Drive, near to Waterworld, between 4.45pm and 6.10pm.
