RSPCA staff in Tynedale have been overwhelmed by support from the public to raise £2,700 for specialist surgery for Boswell.

The American Bulldog is the Northumberland West branch's longest staying resident and has undergone an operation to repair damaged cruciate ligaments.

Charity shops in Hexham, Prudhoe and Rothbury have received a steady stream of donations and regular inquiries about Boswell's conditio .

Donations to help the branch cover the cost of the treatment have already reached £300 online, with the Hexham shop alone collecting over £350 within 10 days.

"We've been blown away by the response," said the Hexham RSPCA shop manager, Marie Hepplewhite.

"Lots of people have asked about Boswell and we've had some making special trips into Hexham to make a donation - one lady got the bus from Newcastle.

"It's going to be a lengthy recovery for him but the surgery went well."

The appeal is ongoing and donations can be left at any of the RSPCA shops, as well as online, at www.rspca.org.uk/local/northumberland-west-branch
