A STAGGERING £22,000 generated at the annual Tynedale Beer Festival in Corbridge has been handed out to good causes from across the district.

Organised by Tynedale Lions in partnership with Tynedale Rugby Club, the three-day beer festival is the flagship event for the Lions and attracts thousands of revellers to the district each and every June.

This year’s beneficiaries were the Calvert Trust Kielder and Marie Curie, which each received £7,000, while the youth initiatives in Hexham and Corbridge were both awarded £4,000.

“This year is an important one for the Tynedale Lions Club, as not only is it the centennial year for Lions International, it is the 40th anniversary of the club,” said member Ian Cave.

To mark the centennial year, parish councils across the district were contacted and asked if they had any projects in need of financial support.

“The response was good and we have been pleased to support a short tourist guide for the Newbrough Water Trail, an information board for the riverside picnic site at Haydon Bridge, the recovering with wood chip for Humshaugh Children’s Playing Field Trust and the the Riding Mill Play Park redevelopement project to update the village play park,” Ian added.

Permission has also been given to site benches in Hexham and Corbridge to commemorate thecentennial year and the service of the Lions to local communities.

To mark the Tynedale club’s 40th anniversary, extra grants have been awarded to WECAN, Josie’s Dragonfly Trust, the Charlotte Straker Project, West Northumberland Food Bank and Stocksfield Cricket Club.
