IN the build-up to the 10th anniversary of the revived Newbrough Produce Show last weekend, some predicted a disaster.

The show was a week later than usual; it had been a mixed season in the garden and a key player in each of the baking, fruit and vegetable sections was unable to take part.

But the doomsayers were wrong, for the benches inside Newbrough Town Hall were filled with delicious cakes, pies and tarts, fruit, vegetables and beautiful flowers.

There were familiar names on the trophy list but also three new cup winners.

Alan Charlton walked away with the Parish Shield for best marrow, while Mary Wilson took the Pam Johnston Memorial Cup for her runner beans.

A champion at a very young age was Bobby Watson, who can now display a trophy for the best exhibit in the children’s section.

Regular winner David Walton took three trophies this time around – best vegetable exhibit; most points in the vegetable section and best exhibit in flowers.

The flower prize recognised David’s flawless exhibit of three snow white gladioli.

Rob Tindall earned the Ian Dodd Memorial Cup for most points in the flower section and the R. Brown Challenge Cup for the best exhibit in the onion/leek section, with his three red onions.

In the home baking and craft section, Sylvia Richardson carried all before her to win the Mrs R. B. Dodd Perpetual Challenge Cup for most points.

In baking, her son, John Jnr, won The Mrs M. Walton Cup for best exhibit with his decorated cake model of the Flying Scotsman.

In the craft section, spectators marvelled at the exquisite workmanship of Gill Charlton’s christening gown which earned her the Parish Cup.

Children from Newbrough Primary School demonstrated their recently-acquired skills as country dancers before the day ended with the presentation of awards.
