A CAMPAIGN has been launched to save the last bank in Alston Moor from closure.
Residents fear their remote community will be turned into a ghost town if the Barclays branch in the town closes as planned on December 4.
News of closure was leaked at the weekend and a social media campaign, Save Alston Moor's Last Bank, has already garnered over 370 online supporters.
Alston's bank is one of 79 Barclays branches earmarked for closure between now and the end of the year.
The bank confirmed closure plans in a letter to campaigners, stating that the Alston branch was one of the quietest in the UK and the number of customer had dropped in recent years.
Barclays is Alston's only remaining bank following the closure of the town's HSBC branch in June.
