A MIDSUMMER afternoon in an English country garden was enjoyed at Langley on Sunday.

Tom and Belinda Speir opened the impressive grounds of their home at East Deanraw Farm, Langley, for a day of exploration for all the family.

The couple developed the three-acre garden from what was just bare fell, and have hosted several charity open days in recent years.

This time around, all proceeds will benefit two Haydon Bridge churches, St Cuthbert's and St John of Beverley.

Dozens of people turned out to explore the picturesque garden, which included an idyllic pond and other colourful features.

Local band Cherry Pickers performed, while there was also a well-stocked plant stall, and home-baked afternoon teas.

There was a display of produce from local allotments, before vegetable exhibits were auctioned off.

There was also a competition for the best arrangement of wild or garden flowers.

Tom Speir said: "We were fortunate with the weather and thankfully a healthy number of people came along to spend the afternoon with us.

"It was a very social occasion. People were very complementary of our garden.

"It was nice to see the excellent produce from allotment holders, with some of them coming along on the day, and also the plants and arrangements of flowers which were brought along. Thanks to everyone who supported us."
