AN ACOMB man has been honoured for his work with a mountain rescue service.

During last weekend’s training event held by North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team at Wooler, volunteer team member John MacDonald received an award for 30 years’ service from the Mountain Rescue Council of England and Wales. The award was presented by North of Tyne team chairman Ian Thompson.

John was a founder member of the team in the 1970s and has attended emergency callouts throughout Northumberland, as well as passing on his knowledge and experience at team training events.

During the training weekend, John was at the forefront of an exercise in the Cheviots, assisting with the practice rescue of three casualties from steep, craggy and challenging ground.

“All of us who love the outdoors know what a fantastic job is done by Mountain Rescue teams who selflessly turn out to aid injured or missing members of the public at all times of the day and night and all weather conditions,” John said.

“It has been an honour and a privilege to serve with some dedicated and skilled personnel over the years and I’m delighted to receive this award from one of them.”

Mr Thompson, who lives in Rothbury, said: “John’s help and support in the team has been invaluable.

“As well as turning out to emergency callouts, he has supported other team members by passing on his skill and experience.

“The Mountain Rescue Long Service Award is recognition of the contribution he has made to North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team.”
