OVER 1,000 ducks went for a swim in Haydon Bridge last Sunday – and villagers turned out to cheer them on.

The annual Haydon Bridge Duck Race saw yellow-coloured plastic ducks released into the River South Tyne, from an entry point near to the former Haydon Hotel.

A team of hardy volunteers were on hand to collect the ducks in fishing nets, after they passed under the old bridge, which was an ideal vantage point for spectators.

The event takes place each year, in aid of Haydon Bridge Cricket Club and Haydon Bridge Playgroup.
