Four weeks of closures have been planned on a major A road.

The A22 London Road in Forest Row, near East Grinstead, will be closed between Priory Road and Wall Hill Road overnight from May 28 until June 22.

East Sussex Highways said the closures will be in place every night from 7pm through to 7am.

This is to allow major improvement work to be carried out, including the resurfacing of the carriageway.

The highways team will also carry out other work including minor kerb repairs, replacement of the high friction road surface and replacing road markings.

Manhole covers and drain covers will be replaced by the team if necessary and the highway gullies will be cleaned.

The highways team said interim repairs have been carried out at this location previously.

This was part of investigation work to find out why movement had caused cracking on the road's surface.

A spokesman for East Sussex Highways said: "The A22 in Forest Row is a key route in the county’s road network and carries a significant amount of traffic.

“This work is necessary to enable us to carry out essential repairs to strengthen the structure of the road and improve its surface creating a smoother ride for road users.

“We apologise for the inconvenience the work and overnight road closures will cause but would ask the public to bear with us as we complete this important road maintenance project.”

While the road closure is in place, access for residents, businesses and emergency services will be maintained.

Motorists will need to follow the signed diversion route in place via the A22, A264, A26, and A22 during this time.

It has also been confirmed that temporary traffic lights will be in place between 7am and 7pm from May 28 until June 5 to allow certain parts of the work to be carried out throughout the day.
