A number of students from Queen Elizabeth High School (QEHS) have been awarded at Tynedale Lions Club's Young Persons Excellence Awards.

The annual ceremony, this year held at the County Hotel, saw a number of winners leaving with a £500 bursary each, celebrating the unseen and unrewarded achievements of many young people.

The awards came under four categories: Creative Arts, Music, Environmental Science, and Service to The Community.

This year, Alice Di Lullo, Samantha Bull, and Peter Cowley were announced winners in the Music category.

They have been recognised for their efforts to keep the tradition of folk music alive, training younger musicians in the art.

Their bursary will be used to further develop their skills, spreading their love for folk music even further.

James Strike, also a QEHS student, won the Service to The Community category.

The student is an army cadet and is also in the process of completing his Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award.

He also volunteers for the Chrysalis Foundation and the RSPCA, whilst supporting younger students in his School's Drama Department.

On top of this, he also helps care for his younger sister who has Downs Syndrome.

Mr Strike has applied for a degree course in Paramedic Science and has earmarked his bursary to cover fees for a first aid course.

Unfortunately, the level of submissions for the Creative Arts and Environmental Science categories meant that a bursary award was not handed out this year.
