Charlotte Straker House in Corbridge is set to reopen its community respite bed, thanks to a generous legacy.

The charity-funded facility, which had to close in early 2023 due to cost hikes and fundraising difficulties, is now able to relaunch its respite service on May 1.

Berenice Groves, chair of the trustees, said: "Our staff see first-hand the pressure on carers in Northumberland and the difficulties in caring for dependent loved ones.

"Our respite bed is 100 per cent free for local families and offers them a much-needed break from their caring responsibilities.

"We will be opening our fundraising campaign to ensure that the bed remains open."

The facility costs in excess of £60,000 per annum to run.

Donations towards the upkeep of the service, no matter how big or small, are gratefully received.
