A £700,000 investment is set to protect rural Northumberland's water supplies with an upgrade to a remote water treatment plant.

Northumbrian Water's project will include replacing a large tank at Allenheads Water Treatment Works, which has reached the end of its operational lifespan.

The work, which will be carried out by the water company's partner, Stonbury, will take approximately six months, kicking off with surveys and site establishment in April.

Northumbrian Water’s project manager, Hedley Young said: "This is a significant investment in water supplies for customers in one of our most rural communities."

“All of the work is set to take place either on, or next to, our site, and we are working with Stonbury and local landowners to ensure that we can complete this important work ahead of the winter months, avoiding the impact of the heavy weather this can bring in such a remote area.”
