Organisers have said: “Our mission is to promote reading for pleasure, offering every child and young person the opportunity to have a book of their own.

“ We want to see more children, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, with a life-long habit of reading for pleasure and the improved life chances this brings them.”

Here, we look back in our archives at all the wonderfully creative ways Tynedale’s youngest celebrated the day of reading and writing in schools.

One of the activities was World Book Day LIVE with Matilda and friends, which was live from the Cambridge Theatre – home of Matilda the Musical. The show included Children’s Laureate Cressida Cowell, rapper MC Grammar, Chris Riddell, Frank Cottrell-Boyce, Allen Fatimaharan, and Hannah Lee.

For the anniversary, BBC did a 'Teach Live Lesson', which was a curriculum-linked live interactive programme to support reading for pleasure specially made for World Book Day for teachers and pupils.
