POLICE CUTS: Northumbria Police announced the number of police stations in Tynedale was to be slashed from six to just one, with the loss of stations in Prudhoe, Corbridge, Ponteland, Bellingham and Haltwhistle and only Hexham's station surviving.

JOB LOSS: Around 50 employees of AkzoNobel in Prudhoe were to lose their jobs when the factory was due to close.

BRIDGE REPAIRS: Essential maintenance repairs were undertaken to protect Corbridge's historic bridge including re-pointing work on parapets and new cabling for replacement traffic lights.

BUS INVESTMENT: A massive £1.4m boost was announced for bus services in Tynedale.

NOISE PETITION: Nine months after the promised clean-up of the Egger UK factory in Hexham, Tynedale Council received another protest petition of noise against the factory.

PROTEST CANCELLED: Taxi drivers in Hexham called off a second go-slow protest after agreeing to give Tynedale Council more time to consider proposals to expand the number of parking bays in town.

BRIDGE LIGHTS: Prudhoe Urban Council insisted for traffic lights to be installed at the Prudhoe-Ovingham bridge.

EXPLOSION: A Hexham couple escaped death after a gas explosion wrecked their bungalow.

POWER GROUPS: Tynedale was divided into three new rota groups as the district braced itself for power cuts and petrol shortages caused by the national miners' strike.

75 years ago

CONDEMNED MEAT: Eighty-seven tonnes of meat and offal that would have met the ration book demands of the entire population of Hexham for six months was condemned as unfit for human consumption at Hexham slaughterhouse.

ACCOUNTS JUMP: A record number of accounts were opened in the Tindale Ward Savings Bank in Hexham. The 769 accounts was the largest number opened in one year since the bank began in 1807.

100 years ago

BAD WEATHER MONTH: Tynedale saw 5.31 inches of rain, five inches of snow and only five dry days in the entire month of November.

NEW KENNEL: A new kennel for the Chinese breed of dog, the chow chow, was founded in Stocksfield.

125 years ago

TRAGEDY AT HEXHAM: The body of a Hexham gamekeeper was found at the side of the road near Yarridge. 

PUBLIC SERVICES: Mr Matthew Henderson, a member of Hexham Board of Guardians, was presented with an oil portrait of himself and his wife, a marble timepiece and a gold albert in recognition of his 50 years of public service.

AWESOME NEWCOMER: A traction engine made its first appearance in the quiet dales of Allen to the great wonder and astonishment of many.

FATAL ACCIDENT: A Hexham woodman was thrown from his cart to his death when his horse stumbled as he was travelling home to Lowgate.
