Voluntary and community groups who are helping the county with environmental projects can apply for thousands of pounds to aid their efforts.

A total of £55,000 is available through Northumberland County Council’s Environment and Climate Fund.

The council say the funding pot shows its dedication to preserving the environment.

Applying groups can request up to £5,000 to assist with initiatives that support nature and slash greenhouse gas emissions.

Eligible applicants must be based in Northumberland, and could be a voluntary group, community organisation, registered charity, constituted group or club, community interest company, social enterprise, or a Town or Parish Council.

Faith groups with inclusive projects are welcome to apply.

Applications will be accepted until 12 noon on November 14, 2023.

Successful bids must align with at least one of the Council’s environmental or climate change initiatives.

These may involve reducing emissions, supporting community engagement and education, enhancing energy efficiency in buildings, promoting active and sustainable transport or upgrading waste solutions to boost reusing and recycling.

The Council’s Leader, Glen Sanderson, has urged eligible groups to apply.

He said: "The Council is committed to protecting and enhancing our environment and we want to support our community groups wherever possible to join us on our journey to become carbon neutral by 2030.

"There's a clear need for us to explore ways we can all work together to create an environment that works for everyone across our county."

He reflected on Northumberland's natural beauty, and emphasised the determination to safeguard it.

He said: "We have so much to be proud of with our green spaces, spectacular countryside, beautiful coastline, and our amazing wildlife and habitats.

"As a Council, we’re determined to protect these areas and make improvements where needed."

The Council is considering how natural surroundings can buffer climate change impacts, taking the lead in the North East’s nature recovery.

"We’ve all got our part to play in improving our environment, and I look forward to seeing more eco projects come to life," Cllr Sanderson added.
