GREEN FINGERED pupils have secured funding for their school garden project by winning a competition finals in the House of Lords.

Corbridge Middle School sowed what they reaped after being named one of the winners of the Young Green Briton Challenge.

The Challenge supports students aged 11-14 to learn and apply design, innovation, business and other transferable skills, empowering young people to explore local climate and sustainability issues and design entrepreneurial solutions (Eco-Ventures) or campaigns (Eco-Campaigns) to address the problems they identify.

During the event, the team, appropriately named Go Green Gorillas, wowed judges with a video they made explaining how they grew salad that was eaten in school dinners, created a wormery to make fertiliser, held plant and seed sales to raise funds and demonstrated resilence when the polytunnel was damaged

The team won a £1000 investment prize, which they intend to use to support and promote school gardening.

The pupils competed against 3,000 young people across 16 schools.

Mrs Adele Brown, Head of Corbridge Middle School said: "We were absolutely thrilled that our Year 7 group, the Go Green Gorillas, won a prize at the Young Green Briton Challenge!

"They have secured additional funding for their school garden project.

"They have all worked so hard and were able to showcase all of their fantastic efforts at the event in London.

"We are incredibly proud of them all and we look forward to seeing the school garden continue to blossom and grow!

"Well done everyone!"
