AFTER four years of coming in second place to Cornwall for a national award, Northumberland Tourism is launching a campaign to change its fortunes.

Northumberland is in the running for Best UK Holiday County/ Destination in the British Travel awards.

Northumberland Tourism said recent feedback from the official awards team showed that Northumberland was running a close second to current leaders Cornwall - who have won the award for the past four years.

But with the votes so close, it is believed the public can help change the tradition this year.

The British Travel Awards are considered the benchmark for excellence when it comes to finding out who really is the best in the travel industry.

The winner will be determined by the public, who have until September 30 to cast their vote on the Northumberland Tourism website.

Jude Leitch, director of Northumberland Tourism, said: β€œTo win Gold would be great recognition of the hard work and dedication of everyone involved in the industry across the county.”
